It’s Heating Up: Spring Cleaning For Your Home

My SD Moms March 30, 2015

Spring is officially here, and the rise in temperatures has already hit San Diego! This time of year, it is important to dive into a little spring-cleaning for your home to keep energy costs as low as possible and to ensure that your home is cool and comfortable throughout the months to come.

Save yourself some time, stress and money by prepping your home, and your HVAC system, early this spring.

  • Schedule a Spring Tune-Up: According to the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, 50 percent of all sicknesses are triggered by poor indoor air quality. With the spring season comes a new wave of seasonal allergies. Schedule a spring tune-up with your local HVAC professional, which includes a thorough inspection of your HVAC unit’s longevity, cleanliness, energy efficiency and performance. This tune up can help ensure that winter toxins are eliminated, spring allergy triggers are minimized, and your family’s air can be clean and cool all summer long.
  • open_windowInstall Sun Protection for Your Windows and Doors: Install shades, blinds or other protective window coverings to help keep the summer heat out of your home. Not only will it keep the house cooler, you will save on energy by not requiring your AC system to run as often.
  • Keep your filters clean: Dirty filters can restrict airflow and cause your HVAC system to work overtime, increasing unnecessary energy use and raising your bill. By replacing your filters at least four times per year, you could potentially save money on energy bills and help avoid costly system repairs or replacement. Where a dirty, overloaded filter can become a source of air contamination in your home.
  • Consider Investing in a Wi-Fi Thermostat: According to the EPA’s Energy Star program, Wi-Fi thermostats can save an average of $180 a year on cooling and heating costs. The product is enabled via Wi-Fi, so it can be programmed to any desired temperature from your computer, tablet or smart phone. If you are planning a spring or summer vacation, use your Wi-Fi thermostat to save money and energy while you’re away from the home.

Energy-efficient practices not only benefit our planet, but help conserve our natural resources, in turn conserving your budget. When maintaining your home’s systems, be sure to choose a HVAC contractor who is knowledgeable about air conditioner efficiency options.
