Mother’s Day this year was a little different for our family, because my husband and I were out of town all weekend and didn’t get home until late afternoon on Mother’s Day. My mom had stayed with our daughter all weekend, and we’d hidden some gifts and cards for F to give her grandma that Sunday morning, but for me – all I wanted to do was be with our girl and yet I was stuck in Northern California, at the mercy of airline schedules and tickets bought months before. While it was a fun weekend away, the minute I woke up Sunday morning, all I wanted to do was to be home with F.

Fortunately, our flight was on time and we made it home with a few hours of sunlight left to share. And that greeting? When we opened the front door and F came running at me with a huge smile? It was more than worth the wait. She had apparently spent that morning making little gifts for me, which really meant she had collected trinkets from around the house and wrapped them up in fabric & bows. She had brought home notecards with her own artwork on them, but instead of gifting me with the blank set, she wrote in every single one and sealed each one in its envelope.  The gift that melted me the most, though, was the giant card she made that said, “Mom you roock, I see your hart glowing.”

Six year olds. They can be so challenging and so, so incredibly beautiful at the same time. Actually, I think that holds true for people of any age, right? Those snuggles and sweet gifts on Mother’s Day reminded me of all the goodness that is parenting, and why we forge ahead through all the tough stuff. I am so grateful to be her mama. How was your Mother’s Day? I hope it was perfect in its imperfections, just like mine.
