Summer is here and the kids are home… So what do you do now? Within a week they’ll probably be tired of doing stuff at home, so it’s time to get out and explore some fun things around San Diego. Here are some of favorite free and cheap things to do all over San Diego with the family:

Movies in the Park

Nothing says summer like hanging out at the park and having a picnic. Add in a free movie and this is the perfect family activity! Summer Movies in the Park event series began in 2007 as a ‘take back our parks’ initiative, giving local residents a reason to visit their local county and city parks for a free and safe evening event. The city of San Diego is offering a variety of movies all throughout the summer at different parks. Pro tip: catching a movie at Waterfront Park is SO San Diego! Where else can you watch a movie and play in a free splash pad while looking over the San Diego bay? For more information and a full listing of events:

Free Summer Reading Program

Read, Renew, Repeat during the Summer Reading Program!  People of all ages are encouraged to participate in this conservation-focused event aimed at protecting, maintaining, and restoring the city’s diverse habitats, ecosystems, wildlife, and natural resources.  Complete a combination of 10 books, hours of reading or activities to claim your prizes.  Sign-up begins June 1st and the program will last through August 31st.

Visit a Splash Pad

We’re not there yet, but things are going to really heat up soon and nothing helps when it gets hot more than a splash pad. Luckily San Diego has a TON of free or cheap splash pads to enjoy with the entire family. Check out the complete list:
