Celebrities are embracing a summer trend: hairy armpits. A women’s rights advocate is currently hosting a contest in China that asks women to post photos of their unshaven armpits. Womans_armpitShe, along with celebrities like Jemima Kirke, Madonna, Miley Cyrus, and Lena Dunham have been challenging the universal belief that women’s beauty should include completely shaven armpit hair.

“Men have more freedom in terms of what do with their bodies…I’m just saying if some people don’t want to shave, the rest of us should not think their underarm hair is disgusting, unhygienic, uncivil or not feminine enough,” Xiao Meili, the woman behind the contest in China, told The New York Times. One particular celebrity who would probably agree with Meili is Jemima Kirke. A week ago, the Girls actress was photographed on the CFDA Award’s red carpet with underarm hair.

The free-spirited actress faced widespread criticism and mockery, including E! Online , which reacted with “Cringe!” Kirke’s underarm hair upstaged many of the designers who attended the event to receive awards. Kirke responded on Twitter with a picture of Sophia Loren and a simple request to end the conversation.
