GET YOUR FINGER OUT OF YOUR NOSE! How many times has that come bellowing out of your mouth to your kids? It’s gross right! I mean who wants to see some kid picking their nose or even worse…eating what they dig out of there? Well fasten your seat belts and toss out those tissues. Scientists are finding out that picking your nose may not be such a bad idea after all.

Don’t get completely grossed out yet. There is a reason for this and it’s not to gross people out. The mention of the word snot makes you think of  thick, sticky and icky – but it contains “salivary mucins,” which act as a physical barrier against cavities. These salivary mucins also help prevent the bacteria that causes them from sticking onto our teeth. So in essence, that mucus your kid pulled out of his or her nose and then ate could be a natural resource for cavity prevention. Trust me…even as I write this I’m kind of gagging, but hey…think of all of the money you’ll save on dental expenses. See…there is always an upside.

Wait…that’s not all…there’s more!

Researchers have also identified even more benefits to mucins. Some studies suggest the mucus-y component might also combat stomach ulcers, respiratory infections, and … HIV. Wow…those are some powerful boogers. Our bodies are pretty amazing when you think about it.

While the thought and site of nose picking and booger eating is…well lets be honest…completely 100% disgusting, it seems that it is a natural way of the body taking care of itself. Studies also suggest kids who pick n eat, are happier kids. So if it leads to less cranky children and less money spend at the dentist, can you deal with it? Just be sure to monitor the little pickers so they aren’t causing nasty nose bleeds.
