My mom and I run into old family friends all of the time when I come out to visit. Especially when her and I go back to New York where she’s come from, and I spent the beginning years of my life.

It always goes something like this..

“WOW! Hi Melissa. Is this your daughter?” the person will say. “OMG. I remember when she was this high! How old is she now?”

This one time (without hesitating), my mom says, “16.” Me, 24, is clearly confused and annoyed at her. So I asked her as they walked away why she would tell them I was a teenager, thinking she was being petty (because I may act that age).

My mom goes, “I’ve been lying about my age for so long, it suddenly dawned on me that I’d have to start lying about yours too.”
