My friend’s mom recently passed away and she reminded me to never take our parents for granted.  As my family can attest to, I try to make the most of every visit.

We try really hard to keep a strong relationship between our children and all their grandparents, aunts, and uncles especially because we live 2,000 miles away.

grandparentsThis week my in-laws are visiting and I love when family actually stays with us.  That way we can spend even more time together and those small moments like family movie night, turn into life-long memories.

My babies are now toddlers and it’s so great to see them call out to Grandma and Grandpa, get excited to show off their toys, and interact together.  It’s also great for my husband and I to be part of these memories; and let’s be honest, have the best babysitters we can think of while we get some time to ourselves!

Now it’s time for a reality check: when was the last time you checked in with YOUR parents and grandparents?  My husband’s grandpa is in an assisted living home, and we made sure to make time to go there and hang out with him on our last trip home to Wisconsin.  NO excuses of being too busy.   It literally took one hour of our life to sit, chat, and laugh with him.  When I go to Church with my grandma or out to breakfast with her, those few hours spent together are worth so much not only to her but to me.

So pick up the phone and make a call, or better yet make a date to spend time with them “before it’s too late.”
