My SD Moms The much-anticipated first day of school has now come and gone. You’ve met your child’s new teacher, attended Back to School Night, and have settled into a daily school routine. At some point during this process, you’ve probably been asked about volunteering at your child’s school.
Volunteering is a great way to stay connected to your child’s school, teachers and friends, while also exemplifying leadership to your child at an early age. By taking an interest in your child’s schooling, you are showing him that you value his education, send a positive message about the merits of learning in quality environment, and demonstrate the importance of being part of a larger community.
Schools rely heavily on the generosity of volunteers like Moms (and Dads!) to function. With school funding dwindling in countless cities, many daily activities would not be possible were it not for a stalwart group of dedicated parents who volunteer their time at local schools. Whether it be raising funds for basic school supplies, chaperoning a school field trip or school dance, or offering an extra hand in the classroom, every little bit of volunteer work you do helps build a foundation for your child and school’s success.
Whether you’re a stay-at-home or working mom, there are no limits to the volunteer opportunities available. It’s all about uncovering the right opportunity that fits your talents and your schedule. If you have a specific skill set you would like to offer, approach your child’s teacher after class or discuss it during your next parent-teacher conference to brainstorm ideas. If you are not available during the school day, volunteer your time during weekend fundraisers or after-school events. Getting involved in your school’s PTA also presents endless volunteer opportunities in areas where your school needs it most. You can even try out a few different volunteer roles to see which ones fit best before launching into a full-fledged or long-term volunteer position.
Don’t hesitate to ask your child’s teacher what you can do to help, as there are always opportunities available. No matter what your volunteer role may be, remember that your efforts not only benefit your own child, but they enrich the entire school community and make you a part of something greater.
