IMG_1755That “snot sucker thingy” is getting a lot of use these days.  Are you dealing with this cold/flu season with your family or have you been lucky to avoid it?  I feel like an expert now since we were hit with it over 3 weeks ago.  Let me help you out!

My family had been sick-free for the last 3 years while living in San Diego, but as soon as we arrived back home in Wisconsin over the holidays we knew we were at risk.  Sure enough, the whole family got sick and we started asking everyone with kids “how do you deal with your kid(s) having a cold/runny nose?”  Number #1 response was to let it just run it’s course and have an arsenal of snot suckers.

This sounds easier than it really is.  I felt like a cowgirl trying to wrangle a baby cow while trying to get our 2 year old and 6 month old to sit still for the snot sucker. Then came the nights when our 6 month old couldn’t breath thru her nose and needs to suck her thumb to fall asleep. She would sleep for a little bit and wake up frequently because she couldn’t breath- it was a vicious cycle!

The pharmacy helped us out and here’s what you need to know:  get some chest rub for babies, saline solution for their noses, and a steamer if your place is really dry.  Our 2 year old had a cough too, so we also got the natural honey cough medicine for kids over the age of 2, and yes I took some too. I was dealing with the worst cough of my life and the honey felt great on my throat!

I’m happy to report the family is back to normal and I’m the last one dealing with a cold. The life of being a mom sometimes…
