Fall Back: The Children’s Historical Street Faire
November 9, 2014 @ 11:00 am - 4:00 pm
FreeHistory can be fun, and we’re out to prove it!
Fall Back is our annual children’s street faire held on the first Sunday of November (the end of Daylight Savings Time – when the clocks “fall back”) giving children and families the chance to “fall back” in time and experience what life was like in the mid- to late- nineteenth century when San Diego was a bustling new town.
Admission is free, but there are nominal fees required for some activities, such as the carnival rides.
Between old-fashioned festivities like pony rides and ice cream- and pie-eating contests, there are historical recreations and demonstrations with a “nineteenth-century” blacksmith plying his trade, prospectors teaching children how to pan for gold, butter churning and candle dipping demonstrations, and a Wild West shoot-out, to name a few.
Kids absorb history by simply observing and participating – and they love it!
Cultural offerings are the other side of Fall Back. Native American and other folkloric dancers delight audiences of all ages. Children engage in Southwest Indian sand painting, Chinese calligraphy, model railroad demonstration, and a drumming jam session, all the while being entertained my magicians, musicians, and dancers. They will be intrigued by local Native American tales told by renowned storyteller Abel Silvas.
Additionally, activities at the craft booths will provide the children with keep-sakes of a fabulous day.
Kids in attendance will get:
- Free Hot Dog at Dick’s Last Resort Hot Dog Stand
- Free Ice Cream Sundae and Chocolate Squares at the Ghirardelli Chocolate Saloon
