Back when I was a kid, in the late 1970’s – early 1980’s – I was introduced to monster movies by my mother. My mom grew up watching Frankenstein, King Kong, and the Mummy…all with her father who was a huge fan. My life was changed forever…I was “bitten” so to speak by the scary movie bug – it now ran through my veins. Still, there were movies my mother would never let me watch as a small child. The Shinning, Halloween, Friday the 13th were off limits. I was probably 10 the first time I saw the Exorcist and till this day I can’t watch it without grasping a crucifix in my hands. So there are limits for children I think. There is also a major importance for spouses to communicate with one another when one is letting the little one’s watch scary movies. This mother was quite surprised.

When this mother walked in on her husband and son watching a horror movie, her first reaction was not good. However she thought they looked so cute sitting on the couch in the dark, bonding and smuggling. She figured she’d yell at him later. After the movie was over and her son was put to bed, she states the conversation went something like this…

“What the hell were you thinking?!?”

Husband: “I’m sorry. It won’t happen again.”

“How am I going to get him to sleep?”

Husband: “I’ll do it. It’s my fault. I’ll get him to sleep.”

“Okay, but don’t ever let him watch movies like that again. What were you thinking?!?”

Well that’s the end of that…she thought. For years her son had developed bad sleeping habits, even chronic nightmares.

There are definable guidelines to follow when letting your little one’s watch a scary or monster movie. Kids are extremely impressionable. Their little brains are right in the middle of developing so be very careful what they are exposed to. They may say….”that’s not scary”…but look what happened when I saw the Exorcist at age 10. I’m not saying they will grow up to be serial killers, but can be impacted psychologically by brutal horror or anything too scary.
