Soon after sixth grader Sheaffer Skadsen was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes, she found she was far from alone. With the help of Sara Bell, MD, a Kaiser Permanente pediatrician and a team that includes a registered nurse, dietitian and social worker, Sheaffer learned to manage her diabetes. Now college age, Sheaffer is heading to the University of Arizona on a soccer scholarship. An electronic insulin pump enables Sheaffer to download information about her glucose levels and transmit it to her Kaiser Permanente care team for monitoring. “This will just be a unique way for us to continue to provide good care, because that’s our goal,” said Dr. Bell.
