A home swimming pool can be a saving grace during the hot days of summer, but also a place of tragedy.

Thankfully this story has a happy ending, thanks to a 12-year-old girl who rescued her drowning sister.

Accidents like this can happen fast.

Carin Richardson of Mundy Township, Michigan, is being praised for her quick thinking and heroic actions that saved her 3-year-old sister, Jac’Lynn. After a family dip in the pool, everyone headed back into the house except for Carin. After all, what 12-year-old wouldn’t want a little extra time to splash around? While no one batted an eye as Carin left the house, they also didn’t see little Jac’Lynn sneak out.

“Jac’Lynn got out and followed behind and attempted to get in her swim tube in the pool and went through to the bottom,” Tomarra Richardson, Carin and Jac’Lynn’s mother, told ABC 12 News. Without hesitation, Carin jumped into the pool to save her younger sister before bringing her to safety.

Tomarra can’t thank her daughter Carin enough for her swift actions that kept tragedy from occurring. In fact, they are very surprised she was able to act so fast, considering Carin has Down syndrome.
