My five-year-old Walt has Autism Spectrum Disorder and is in constant need of sensory stimuli. So if there is anything we know in our house, it is sensory toys. Here are his five favorite toys that any kid would love:
Swivel Chair
This is the newest addition to our household and has quickly become a favorite. One of my son’s stims is spinning in circles. He can literally do it for hours. This seat is balanced so that it continuously spins when your child balances on it just right. It’s great to work on core strength and balance.
Pipe Cleaners
This is our favorite cheap sensory toy. You can get a ton of Amazon for cheap. My son plays with them for hours making different shapes. If one gets ruined it’s fine because they are so cheap you can just grab a new one.
Water Beads
This is another great one where a little goes a long way. A small amount of these beads make a ton of larger ones. What we do is put a bunch in a tub with a lid with water so they can grow. Then I have a smaller tub that I put a little in at a time that Walt can play with. So when they get destroyed (which they always will) you have some ready to go to refill the play tub with.
Pop Tubes
This is another big bang for your buck sensory toy. The pop tubes have a very pleasing sound and can be played with in multiple ways. I won’t lie, I’ve spent some time playing with these after Walt has gone to bed.
Fidget Slug
I don’t know how to explain why this toy is so awesome, it just is. Walt uses this toy a lot to help him calm down or provide some sensory while doing another task. This 3-pack is also perfect for an Easter basket:
